Laureta and Joe Gibbs, along with CHP Officer Greg Smoak, carry bags of teddy bears into the Barstow CHP station. CHP officers then carry the bears in their trunks and hand them out to children at accident scenes.

Couple drops stuffed animals at Barstow CHP office

In the trunk of every California Highway Patrol unit sits a few small teddy bears placed there, in part, by Joe and Laureta Gibbs.

The Gibbses, a couple from Simi Valley, coordinate the Lazy Daze Caravan Club, a group of RV enthusiasts who also share a passion for making sure CHP officers have teddy bears to give to children at collision scenes. They periodically stop by 16 stations in the High Desert area and drop off bags of individually wrapped bears. On Wednesday, the couple stopped at the Barstow CHP station to drop off about 90 bears.
