SVHS Football: Trojans make history

YERMO • Andy Campbell calls the playoffs chapter two.

The Silver Valley football team made history with a 40-0 win against Webb to open the second chapter on Friday night at Don Price Field.
Looks like it’s going to be a good book.

The Trojans (7-4) earned the first playoff win in program history in their first ever playoff home game, and it wasn’t even close. Webb (4-6) was playing it’s first playoff game ever while the Trojans were in the postseason for the first time since 2002.

Campbell said there was no way he could have predicted such an overpowering playoff win when he arrived in Yermo three seasons ago as an assistant coach.

“This game is a tribute to the kids that have been busting their butts for me for three years,” Campbell said. “They’ve earned this. They’ve earned the right to play in the playoffs.”

The Trojans will play Mojave on the road on Friday in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Northeast Division playoffs. The Trojans shutout Mojave 21-0 in an early-season matchup. The game was called at halftime when running back Darren Johnson had to be flighted to Bakersfield after laying on the field unconssious for half hour. It was later discovered that Johnson had low blood sugar.

Silver Valley jumped out to a 14-0 lead at halftime but saved their onslaught for the third quarter.

The Trojans scored 26 points in the third quarter and controlled the ball for the opening 8 minutes of the quarter. Silver Valley received the first kickoff of the second half and needed just eight plays before Chris Bailey hooked up with Traevon Beddard in the back of the end zone to go up 20-0.

On the kickoff, Silver Valley recovered a high, bouncing onsides kick at the Webb 34 yard line. Bailey punched in 1-yard keeper to make it 26-0.

The Trojans came right back with another onsides kick. The Trojans recovered the kick after it stayed low and bounced off a Webb player. Within four plays Bailey found Matt Weber for another touchdown and a commanding lead.

Bailey finished with 113 rushing yards and went 13-for-19 with 159 yards passing.

“We noticed a couple things on film where we thought they were soft and where we could exploit our aggressiveness,” said Campbell of the onsides kicks. “We figured once we could get them to over shift a little bit, we could onsides the ball to our sideline.”

Webb threaten to score on its first drive in the fourth quarter. An apparent touchdown run from the 4-yard line was called back after a penalty. Two plays later, quarterback Brent Waldo was intercepted in the end zone by Beddard.

The Trojans held the Gauls to 135 yards of offense. For the first time in three attempts this season the Trojans were able to stop a double-wing team. Campbell said it was particularly satisfying after being stomped by Boron in the regular season finale.

“I hate the double wing,” Campbell said. “It’s effective, but it’s like watching paint dry.”
