Barstow's Vernon Sciortino displays the trophy he won at Fight Night Fontana on Saturday.

Sciortino wins first bout

FONTANA • Barstow’s Vernon Sciortino took part in his first Muay Thai Kickboxing competition, and won, last Saturday.

Sciortino competed in Fight Night Fontana at Doblers Muay Thai Kickboxing. Though he has been practicing the sport for the past three years, this was Sciortino’s first formal competition. He brought along support in the form of his trainer, Julian Lugo, and Henry Gutierrez, of Henry Gutierrez Martial Arts in Barstow.

“I want to thank them for supporting me and being in my corner,” said Sciortino. “I also want to thank my family and friends for their support.”

Kickboxing can be a rough sport, and Sciortino got a bit roughed up in victory, suffering a bloody nose and black eye. That, however, won’t stop him from competing in the future.

“It was really nerve-wracking waiting to fight, but once it started, it was so much fun,” he said. “It was great, I loved it. I’ll most definitely compete again.”

The Barstow High School sophomore represented both La Colonia, Lugo's gym, and Henry Gutierrez Martial Arts.
