SVHS Girls Baksetball: Trojans surges in 3rd

YERMO • Beth Davies wishes she could face Shelisha Brown on the court.

While the Boron coach was impressed with the Silver Valley senior forward’s play Tuesday night, her squad might have had a little less fun facing Brown.

Silver Valley opened Desert Mountain League play with a 65-25 win at the Charlies Hawkins Gymnasium. Brown scored 21 points, scrapped for rebounds and helped turn defense into points as the Trojans (5-7; 1-0 DML) overpowered Boron in the second half.

“When they face a girl that strong, it takes them out of the game mentally,” Davies said.

Davies, a former post player, admired Brown’s style and compared a potential matchup after the game.

“Back in my basketball days, I’d love to play against her,” Davies said. “I’d enjoy truly to go one-on-one with her. Even if I’d have height on her, she’d have strength so who wouldn’t want to play against that?”

Silver Valley exploded in the second, out scoring Boron 44-10 when Silver Valley coach Freezy Smalls switch from zone to man-to-man defense.

“They were all in foul trouble so we knew going to a man-to-man defense we could rattle them a little bit,” Smalls said. “We rattled them a lot.”

The Bobcats found themselves in foul trouble early in the game. Boron guard Chelsey Vickers, who was a First Team All-DML player last season, gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead early in the game but collected four fouls before the end of the half. Vickers didn’t start the third quarter, was used only selectively in the second half and finished with six points.

The Trojans went on a 11-1 run to begin the half. Guard China Clay led the charge on defense, forcing Boron into turnovers and then dishing the ball to open teammates — often Brown.

“She’s my best friend,” Brown said. “I’m used to playing with her. We played last year, and I know how she plays.”

When Brown wasn’t scoring, a host of other Trojans chipped in. Silver Valley had eight players score.  Ashley Lawrence scored all of her 10 points in the second half and China Clay added nine points.

The game got off to a slow start with Silver Valley taking a 8-2 lead after the first quarter. Boron narrowed the gap to one point midway through the second quarter but Clay extended the Trojans lead back to three with foul shots.
