Aztecs host wrestling tournament
BARSTOW • The Barstow wrestling team is hosting the Aztec Invitational this weekend, with the action getting underway Friday afternoon. The Aztecs went 1-2 on opening day.
In addition to Barstow, there are seven other schools taking part: Lucerne Valley, Sultana, Centennial (from Las Vegas), Big Bear, Apple Valley, Victorville, and Granite Hills.
“We wrestled tough and did well, getting our first varsity win of the season,” said Sam Barnhart, who is in his first year of coaching the Aztecs.
On day one, the Aztecs beat Lucerne Valley, and fell to Sultana and Centennial.
Barstow’s Ryan Barela went 3-0 in the 120-pound weight divsion, winning by pin, by tech fall and by major decision. Dallas Hawes (113 pounds) and Kiler Holmeyer (heavyweight) each went 2-1 on Friday.
Like last year, the Aztecs are a young team this season, with the core of the squad comprised of sophomores and juniors. There are a couple of freshmen and three seniors.
“It’s a good group of young guys who got off to a good start,” said Barnhart. “I think we’ll do well. I look forward to continuing to train and get better as the season progresses.”
The tourney continues today, with four more rounds to go. The action starts at 9 a.m. at Barstow High School.
The Aztecs will take part in four more tournaments this season. Their next match is Dec. 20 at Burroughs.
