GRAND TERRACE • The Barstow Little League Softball Seniors All-Stars are advancing to the Southern California championships for the second-straight year, following an 8-2 win over Ken Hubbs Little League of Colton Wednesday night to wrap up the Section 8 championship.
“It’s our defense,” said Barstow manager Vince Aviles after the latest victory. “We've got a lot of experienced players that are playing in spots they’re comfortable with and they’re playing well. It helps the pitchers have more confidence that they don’t have to go win the game by themselves. They’ve got the defense behind them.”
Barstow pounded out 10 hits and led, 5-2, after four innings before adding a run in the fourth and two in the seventh.
Brittney Ellis got the win, pitching the first 3.2 innings and giving up two runs on five hits. Alexis York pitched 1.1 before sustaining a knee injury, giving up no runs on one hit. Lauren Chavira pitched a perfect sixth and seventh inning for Barstow to close the game.
“I think everyone’s pitching real well,” said Aviles. “And the good thing is we’re doing well with pitching and defense but we haven’t hit our potential yet with our hitting. I’m looking forward for that to come out real soon.’’
Bianka Griego led Barstow by going 3-for-4 at the plate, while Marissa Dado added two hits.
Barstow also beat the Colton team on Tuesday, 9-4.
Barstow put up five runs in the third, one in the fifth and three in the sixth while pounding out 11 hits.
Aleesha Rodriguez and Dado led the team with three hits each, while Griego added two.
Ellis started the game and went three innings, giving up three runs on five hits. York got the win by going the final four frames, giving up one run on two hits.
“We’re not making mistakes like the other teams are, and we’re capitalizing on their mistakes,” said Aviles. “Our defense is playing solid right now.”
Barstow will open Division 3 play on Tuesday, taking on Section 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Bellflower.
