BHS tennis has doubles distraction in loss

BARSTOW • The Barstow High School boys tennis team had a little distraction during its match Friday.

The Aztes fell 13-5 to Burroughs in their Desert Sky League opener. Barstow’s number two doubles team saw a new face when Ameer Hamdan took over for Waheel Musetief. Musetief and his partner Jerome Angeles competed in Barstow High School’s Mr. Aztec competition Friday night. Musetief was unable to play in order to prepare for the competition.

Coach Leah Johnston said she believed the double’s team was thrown off by Mr. Aztec.

“I think we should have won today,” Johnston said. “I think Mr. Aztec was in their heads. Ameer stepped in and played well. I don’t know what happened with the number one doubles team.”

Barstow won two doubles sets and three singles sets during the match, but two of those wins went to a tie break. Brian Perea led the Aztecs with two wins on the day.

The Aztecs are now 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in the DSL. They have a busy schedule in the coming week. They only one day of practice and two matches to play by Wednesday.

Johnston said the team will get in as much practice as possible, and that her players prefer the shorter layover between matches.

“They actually like playing closer together,” Johnston said. “It keeps them going and sharp. Hopefully we can keep that going after this week because we have a week off afterwards.”
