Barstow's Swisher brings home trophies

CORONA • Barstow’s Jonathon Swisher competed in the Great Pumpkin Karate Tournament in Corona, on October 28th. He was the only student competing from his dojo to bring home two trophies.

Swisher placed first in Brown Belt 9-12 year old Kumite (sparring), and took a second place finish in kata (forms). The brown belt student from the American Karate Association of Champions trains under Kyoshi Linda Pugliese through the City of Barstow Parks and Recreation.

Instructor Pugliese, a 7th degree Black Belt, was awarded the Dragon Image Fighting Award on Oct 13th at the Sports Karate Museum Gathering held at the Marriott in Houston, Texas . The award was in honor and recognition of her diligent outstanding years of competition, winning five consecutive world championship titles in the Nation Black Belt League from 1993-1997, and also a gold medal in Mexico City for the USA team in 1992. She was also nominated to be inducted into the Sports Karate Museum as a General. When the museum is completed, Pugliese will return to Houston to create an impression of her fist and sign her name into the Cement Wall of Fame.

For more information about karate classes, which are held at Jasper Park, please call Linda Pugliese at 760-255-3251.
