BHS Football: Aztecs push past San Jacinto

Barstow rushes for 468 yards against Tigers

SAN JACINTO • Barstow’s speed and size proved to be too much for San Jacinto as the Aztecs routed the Tigers 47-20 Friday night in the opening round of the CIF-Southern Section Eastern Division playoffs.

The Aztecs (8-3) scored on their first five possessions en route to their first playoff victory since 2003.

Seven different players scored touchdowns for the Aztecs, who rushed for 468 yards. DaMario Webb led the way with 155 yards on 17 carries, Jerelle Green had 127 on 11 carries and Curtis Webb added 116 yards on 13 attempts.

DaMario Webb said the Aztecs had an advantage because they played a tougher schedule than San Jacinto, which moved up four playoff divisions after two consecutive trips to the Division XII finals.

“I kind of knew we could come out and just dominate,” DaMario Webb said. “Our line was just dominating over their line.”
“We have got incredible speed,” Barstow coach Jose Rubio said. “They run hard and (opponents) can’t focus on any one of them.”

The Aztecs’ offense gave the Tigers fits all night, punting just once.

“All they play is spread offense,” Rubio said. “We’re old-fashioned.”

Rubio also praised his defense.

“That’s been the focus this whole week,” he said. “If they can’t score, they can’t win, and you hope to pop one or two. We popped a few.”
The win was the first in the playoffs for Rubio as a head coach.

“We wanted to play with discipline, raise expectations of how we carry ourselves,” the Barstow graduate said. “(We told them) they could still play aggressive and win. They did it.”

The Aztecs forced a San Jacinto punt on the first drive and needed just five plays to get on the scoreboard with a 57-yard scoring run by Green.

San Jacinto (7-3-2) quickly tied the game on a 5-yard run by Adam Castellano, but Barstow ran an efficient 8-play, 72-yard drive capped by a 2-yard scoring run by Aquino Spann. DaMario Webb had a 39-yard run to set up the score.

After another San Jacinto punt, the Aztecs needed just five plays to move 74 yards for another score, this one a 3-yard run by Curtis Webb to make it 21-7.

The Tigers fumbled the ball away on first down, giving the Aztecs control on the San Jacinto 33. Eight plays later, Tulilo Tofi scored from the 3 yards out.

San Jacinto then went three-and-out, giving the Aztecs the ball on their own 28 with 1:35 left in the half.

They needed just five plays to score, with a 28-yard run by Curtis Webb setting up a 3-yard touchdown by DaMario Webb.

The scoring didn’t end with the first half. The Aztecs got the ball first in the third quarter and went on an 11-play, 83-yard drive, capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass from Tofi to Odei Abdulla.

San Jacinto wrapped two touchdowns around its first defensive stop of the game, but couldn’t get any closer.
Ricky Burns added a 23-yard touchdown run with 4:15 left for the Aztecs’ final margin.
