Aztecs take Kiwanis win over Spartans
SAN BERNARDINO • The Barstow boys basketball team took its second win on the third day of the Kiwanis Tournament, defeating San Gorgonio, 63-57, on Friday.
The Aztecs won on the tourney’s opening night, beating Pacific in a nailbiter, 55-52. That was followed by another close game, but in this one Barstow came up just short, falling to Redlands East Valley, 58-50, on Thursday.
“Last night’s game was a tough one, we should have pulled it out,” said Aztecs head coach Preston Biggs. “Tonight we led from early in the second quarter on, but we could never quite shake them. They kept hanging around.”
The Aztecs held leads of shifting amounts during the second half. They were ahead by double figures for most of the third and fourth quarters before the Spartans mounted one last offensive. They cut the Barstow lead down to six, but that’s as close as they would get.
Chris Jordan led the victors in scoring with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Cody Boston had a well-rounded game, with nine points, 12 boards and seven blocks. A standout stat was that of Anthony Addison, who came off the bench to score 14 points.
“It’s nice to know we have guys who aren’t starting that are able to come in and be productive,” said Biggs.
The tournament wraps up today, with Barstow playing Oak Hills at 5 p.m. at Arroyo Valley High School. The winner will capture fifth place in the 16-team tourney.
“If we’d won on Thursday, we’d be playing for third place,” said coach Biggs. “But it’s a big tournament, and I’m happy with fifth.”
