Tough loss for Lady Aztecs

RIDGECREST • The Lady Aztecs volleyball team began its Desert Sky League schedule on Monday, and lost to Burroughs in three games, in a road match.

The Burros won by scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-20.

The problem for Barstow in this match? Defense, according to head coach Tynelle Olivas.

“Defensive errors cost us this one,” she said after it was over. “We made 11 receiving errors and 22 dig errors.”

There were some positives in the numbers put up by the Aztecs, who as a team had 21 kills and five aces. Shekinah-Joy Toloumu had six kills, Chelsea Phillips had five, and Heather Verrill led the way with eight. DeAnna Lopez set the pace in digs, with 17.

The loss brings Barstow’s records to 3-2, 0-1. Considering the Aztecs had just one win last year, the team already has some success to build on, and the season is very young.

“This wasn’t the start to the DSL that I wanted, but we know what we need to work on,” said coach Olivas. “I’m confident that with a concentrated and renewed focus at tomorrow’s practice we will be able to come back strong against Victor Valley.”

The Aztecs will play in Victorville on Wednesday, and will take part in the Hesperia Tournament on Saturday.
