BHS Softball: Breaking Murphy's Law

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

BARSTOW — In one swing of the bat, Sultana High School softball Kendra Lewis changed the complexion of the game with an opening inning grand slam, wrestling the momentum from Barstow in Thursday’s 10-3 loss.

“That really just jumped up and bit us hard,” Barstow coach Dan Smith said. “Anytime you are down in the first inning of the game like that it can be demoralizing.”

The Aztecs continued their struggle at the plate and were unable to come up with an answer in the conclusion of the first inning. Barstow’s attempt to answer back quickly when Nicole Ulivarri walked and Cayla Schreiner drew back-to-back walks failed. Then Corrina Zamora hit a basehit to load the innings, when Murphy’s Law began to take affect again and the Aztecs stranded all three runners on base.

“The girls have just hit a wall towards the end of the season,” Barstow coach Dan Smith said. “We can’t seem to reverse Murphy’s Law.”

The Sultans began swinging their bats again in the second inning. Lewis’s basehit scored Emily McCormick and Patti Masner giving Sultana a 6-0 cushion.

Barstow continued the downward spiral in the fourth when the Sultans got three consecutive hits and two bases on balls to before McCormick’s basehit increased the lead to 9-1.

Barstow scored a two more times, but was unable to capitalize on more opportunities.

“We started out playing and hitting really well,” Smith said. “The girls have played really hard all season, I just don’t know what happened. “We have put a lot of pressure on ourselves this year, and we haven’t come up with the hits when we have needed them.”

The Aztecs will play their last two games of the season against Victor Valley on May 5 and May 7 next week to end their regular season. They did not make the Desert Sky League playoffs.

“We are strictly playing for pride in these games,” Smith said. “That’s what you have to do in situations like this.”
