BHS wrestler heads to Rochester, Minn.
ROCHESTER, Minn. • Drue Bosco is hoping 20 pounds, a few inches and a year of experience will help him in Rochester, Minn. this week.
Bosco flew from Los Angeles to Rochester for the Cadet National Dual Championships on Friday. He will participate in a two day camp with other California wrestlers before the competition starts on Tuesday. Bosco, who will wrap up his sophomore year in two weeks, is no stranger to the Cadet National Dual Championship. He wrestled to a 3-2 record in the tournament last year.
However, Bosco said he hopes to improve his record and earn a spot amongst the top wrestlers this year. Bosco and Barstow High School wrestling coach Adam Hopkins developed a plan to get Bosco into a middle weight class after the state tournament earlier this year. Bosco has spent many hours in the weight room, wrestling room and eating in the month and a half since his last competition. In that time he has moved from the 112-pound weight class to the 130-pound weight class and is a few inches taller than last year.
Bosco said he has enjoyed his new diet.
“It’s been nice not worrying about staying at a weight,” Bosco said. “I’m eating a lot more, but I still have to make sure I eat the right things.”
Hopkins said that Bosco’s dedication to their plan is what has helped him get to this point.
“It isn’t just that he’s eating,” Hopkins said. “It’s about what he’s eating. He eating right, lifting and wrestling. He’s putting on the right kind of weight.”
Bosco said that the additional size he’s gained has enhanced his training because he match up more evenly with Hopkins during wrestling drills now. Bosco will find out how he fits into his new weight class when he takes on the top wrestlers in the country on Tuesday.
