Playoff seeds announced for baseball, softball

BARSTOW — Sean Sers is an Internet junkie.
Well before high school baseball playoff seeding were announced Monday, the Barstow High School baseball coach already had a list of three teams he believed his team would face. He already began scouting teams’ www.MaxPreps.com pages for information.
Sers received just one answer but wound up with a bunch more questions after it was revealed the Aztecs, who finished first in the Desert Sky League, will face Norte Vista at 3:15 p.m. on Friday at Barstow High School.
Norte Vista’s MaxPreps page is nearly empty. Several games don’t have the final score even listed, and, unlike the Aztecs’ page, there are no stats available.
“Stats would have helped me a lot, but they didn’t have any stats,” Sers said. “I might just have to rely on some of the coaches in their conference for some info and insight.”
The Braves finished third in the Sunkist League behind Patriot, the No. 1 ranked team in the CIF-Southern Section Division IV, and Kaiser.
“From looking at just their schedule they played in a pretty tough conference,” Sers said. “They played with some pretty good clubs.”
Senior pitcher Freezy Smalls is expected to get the start on Friday. Smalls will have plenty of rest with his last start coming May 5 against Victor Valley.
The Silver Valley softball team, which finished third in the Desert Mountain League, will be sent on the road for the third consecutive playoff season. The Trojans will open the playoffs against Bishop Union in the Div. VI Wild Card Round on Wednesday.
The Trojans, who finished the season with a 13-0 win at Mammoth on Friday, will make another long roadtrip with a more than four-hour trip to Bishop
“I hate making that bus trip, but that’s what happens when you don’t get first (place),” Silver Valley coach Kevin Mintun said.
Bishop Union finished the season as the third-place team in the High Desert League.
“I think we’ll do well. We are at the top our game,” Mintun said. “We’re going to go down there and think big.”
The winner of Wednesday’s game will advance to face Notre Dame Academy on Friday.
