BARSTOW — Barstow High School coach Jose Rubio and Silver Valley Coach Andy Campbell had their clipboard and notebooks ready at Monday night’s passing league game.

Campbell and Rubio were checking their inventory on both the offensive and defensive side of the football, making notes for their forthcoming training camps.

Although no official scores were kept in the games between Barstow, Silver Valley and Aztec High School a school Aztec, N.M., BHS coach Jose Rubio said he was pleased with the results of this summer at the conclusion of their passing league.

“We can get stronger, and we will have to get stronger,” Rubio said. “We can always work harder, and that is what we are going to have to do.”

This summer's passing leagues helped the coaches identify areas Barstow need to improve on. Speed is one of the main areas of concentration BHS will focus on improving during training camp.

“It was great,” Rubio said. “We were able to improve substantially in a lot of different areas over the summer.”

For Campbell, it was an opportunity to play oppenents from bigger schools.

“It’s always great to play teams that you don’t normally play,” Campbell said. “Because on offense and defense, we had really no idea what we were getting into.”

Inspite of playing two schools that have a larger student bodies, Campbell said he was pleased with the overall performance.

“I was really happy with some of the plays, and the way our kids were able to adapt,” Campbell said. “The last two passing camps we were in, we looked good. We got to take a look at a couple of our weaknesses, as well.”

Monday’s scrimmage may lead to more collaboration between the two schools, a thought Campbell relishes.

“By working together in the High Desert we will ultimatley help each other. “It would be great if more schools would do this. We all put our own agendas aside to help the players.”
