Fourth win for Lady Aztecs hoopsters

BARSTOW • The Lady Aztecs basketball team wound up with a close win against Victor Valley Friday, in a tight, 37-35 match at Barstow High School.

Valley controlled through the first half. The Jackrabbits led, 8-1, at the end of the first quarter, and were up by 10 points at halftime. Barstow gained back some ground in the third, outscoring the opposition by a 10-12 margin, and trailed 31-23, going into the fourth.

The offense and defense worked together to pull out the win in the last eight minutes. Vasa Alefaio and Sasha Lewis played tough defense, while the offense scored a game-high 14 points. Behind, 35-32, and with the clock running down, Barstow inbounded the ball, and Tiara Alefaio took control. Alefaio dribbled beyond the arc and let a shot fly. Not only was it good, tying the game, but she was fouled on the play, and went 2-for-3 at the line. That gave the Aztecs a two-point lead, which they wouldn’t relinquish.

Jasmine Green was the Aztecs’ high scorer, with 10 points, along with five rebounds, five steals and two assists, while Vasa Alefaio netted nine points, and had eight rebounds, a steal and assist.

The Jackrabbits fall to 2-6, with Barstow improving to 4-2.

There’s one more game left for the Lady Aztecs this year, at Silverado next Friday.
