Aztecs edged by Hawks

BARSTOW • In a quick match in which the Aztecs won by pin four times, the Barstow wrestling team was clipped by Silverado, 45-34, on Thursday.

The match wrapped in a little over an hour, with most bouts being decided in a minute or two.

“It was quick, only one match went the distance,” said Aztecs head coach Sam Barnhart. “We competed well and looked a lot better than our last dual.”

Barstow won six weight divisions. Leading the way was Ryan Barela at 120-pounds, who pinned the Hawks’ Jamie Ayala in just 1:13. Neil Navarro, at 170-pounds, also did well, pinning his opponent in 2:17. Gabe Rodriguez, at 138-pounds, pinned Jeremy Stiffler in 2:25, and Dallas Hawes, at 113-pounds, pinned Eddie Gonzales in 3:18.

Also taking victories were Cody Bueller, who won the 132-pound division by 14-6 major decision over Andrew Carrion, while heavyweight Kiler Holmeyer won by forfeit.

The match leaves the Aztecs with records of 7-12, 1-2.

In his first year at the helm of the team, Barnhart is happy with the progress his wrestlers have made.

“We continue to improve and be competitive,” said the coach. “We’ve been wrestling really well at home, so we should make a good showing in our last home match and be prepared for (Desert Sky League) finals.”

The DSL finals will be held at Victor Valley High School on Feb. 2 at 11 a.m.

Coach Barnhart also wanted to thank Shawna Santos and the Wrestlerettes, and the BHS cheerleaders for their support on Thursday.

The Aztecs will take part in the Dick Comley Tournament in Victorville today and tomorrow. The final home match of the season is this Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Granite Hills. The squad’s seniors will be recognized prior to the match.
