Aztecs soccer gets third win
RIDGECREST • The Barstow boys soccer team earned its third win of the season Wednesday, blanking Burroughs, 2-0.
The kind of teamwork her players have been putting so much effort into mastering in practice played out on the field, according to head coach Terri Peralta.
“We posessed the ball well, we moved the ball well, and passed well,” she said. “We were switching fields and making our runs. All the things we’ve worked on in practice paid off.”
It was still a scoreless game at halftime. The stalemate was broken about 12 minutes into the second half. After a Burros push just outside the box, the Aztecs were given a free direct kick, and Raul Espinosa Jr. converted. Espinosa was also responsible for the second goal, as he buried the ball in net after it deflected off a defender at the 25-minute mark.
Eath Aztec goalie played for 40 minutes. Zohar Mejia had two saves in the first half, and Simon Sanchez came up with three saves in the second. Barstow outshot Burroughs by a 13-5 margin.
The win brings the Aztecs to 3-4, while the Burros drop to 0-6-1.
Barstow plays at Victor Valley on Friday, and hosts Serrano next Tuesday.
