QUARTZ HILL • The Barstow wrestling team participated in the Rebel Classic Tournament, a large meet held at Quartz Hill High School, on Friday and Saturday. After finishing Friday’s competition in eighth place, the Aztecs did well enough on day two to move up several notches. With a total of 124 points, Barstow placed fifth out of the 18 schools that took part.
Finishing in first place was Highland, with 241 points.
Of the 10 Aztecs who wrestled in the tourney, six of them placed. Going undefeated at 8-0 over the two days was Ryan Barela, who finished first in the 120-pound weight division.
Heavyweight Kiler Holmeyer went 6-2, and was second overall.
There were two third-place finishers: at 113-pounds, Dallas Hawes went 7-1, while Gabe Rodriguez did the same at 145-pounds. Chris Velasco went 5-3 at 126-pounds and was fourth, with Cody Buelher taking sixth place at 138-pounds.
Aztecs head coach Sam Barnhart was not only happy with his team’s performance, but also that its many young wrestlers got the experience of being part of a big meet.
“We have a lot of young kids this year, and they got to see a lot of different teams,” he said. “There were three different sections represented, and one team from out of state. It was good experience for us.
“The boys wrestled well. It kind of surprised me how well we did, but it’s a product of how hard we work. These kids show up and work hard in practice every day. We did our best and had fun and that’s all I can ask for as a coach.”
The Aztecs are off the mats until this weekend’s Granite Hills Dingwall Tournament at Granite Hills High School in Apple Valley.
