SVHS XC: Trojans beat ACE

YERMO • The first runner to cross the finish line came from the Academy for Careers and Exploration.
After that, it was almost all Silver Valley High School cross country runners.

The Trojans performed well at their home dual meet with ACE, a Helendale school, on Tuesday.  Silver Valley runners claimed spots two through six and Trojans boys teams won 20-57. Neither girls team had enough runners to score as a team, but Silver Valley junior Sydney Ferguson finished first at 25 minutes, 43 seconds.

ACE runner Kenny Morck was the first runner to cross the finish line at 19:35 but he was trailed by a bunch of Silver Valley runners. Sophomore Richard Lobel came in at 19:55 while teammate Brandon Lammey, a junior, followed at 20:37.

“I felt like I did better than my other races,” Lobel said. “I trained hard over the weekend.”

Tyler Davidson, Teddy Martin and Marco Perez helped to put the meet away for the Trojans. They came in the fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place spots and they were separated by 1:22.

“We don’t have anyone that’s really fast,” Silver Valley coach Bryan Savage said. “We have a bunch of kids that are pretty consistent and work hard.”

The Trojans return home to host the Desert Mountain League meet on Oct. 29. Savage said the Trojans have a good shot to finish second in league and will be likely be taking on Desert Christian for first place.

In the girls race, Ferguson and ACE runner Christian Guitierrez traded the lead spot throughout the meet. Ferguson, who earned her first first-place finish in her first season running cross country, managed to pass Guitierrez for good in the last third of the race. She ended up beating Guitierrez by 11 seconds.

“She passed me when we were on our second mile,” Ferguson said. “When we went down hill I just let the wind carry me.”

Silver Valley runner Kate Savage finished fourth at 31:20 and Breanna Massimini came in fifth five seconds later.
