W hen what historian Barbara Tuchman called "The Guns of August" began to fire 100 years ago, most Americans saw merely another European war that we should avoid. The modern equivalent of ancient Greek cities were, like their long-ago predecessors, seemingly addicted to recurrent warfare that rearranged boundaries and claimed horrific casualties.
