Business sponsorships of Hispanic groups

This month is Hispanic Heritage month. We should be proud of the many contributions that Hispanics have made to our country. We should also recognize corporations that contribute huge sums of monies to Latino organizations.

McDonalds fast food restaurants was title sponsor of the National Council of La Raza’s annual conference. La Raza means “the people.”

And UPS has donated $750,000 to La Raza this year. Then La Raza supports other Latino groups like MEChA.

I urge everyone to become acquainted with the good works La Raza and MEChA perform for the Latino population both legal and illegal in the United States and Mexico

Steve Beavers, Barstow

Afghanistan illustrates the fog of warfare

In the past of 1942, the World War II German high command refused to allocate more soldiers to General Rommel in North Africa. However, the British navy might have countered such a military plan. The fog of war caused a mistake and confusion.

Currently in 2009, the Taliban does not have a large navy nor air force. American troop movements are more secure than for WWII Germany.

President Obama could be in error for considering withholding 40,000 additional soldiers (and Marines) from entering the Afghanistan “theater.” The fog of strategic war continues.

Without victory in Afghanistan the future of the global paradise might fall short of glory, in the mist of the fog of a guerrilla war.

Michael Cooke, Hinkley
