The High Desert continues to show that it offers more than just cheap housing and long commutes for residents. Officials with the San Bernardino County Fair say their eight-day event attracted record numbers this year, and they have plenty of other entertainment options coming in the weeks and months ahead.

High Desert Event Center CEO Geoff Hinds told reporter Rene De La Cruz that Fair attendance was a record 140,000-145,000, with ticket sales up around 12 percent from last year.

Hinds also said the Fair had record sales for carnival rides, food vendors and parking. He attributed the increase to a solid entertainment lineup, good variety and a quality event. "We had something for everybody," he said.

Hinds and company also benefited from really good weather. In years past, Fair days were sometimes chilly and windy. That wasn't the case this year, at least as far as chilly weather goes. Blue skies, sunshine and warm temperatures made for a pleasant experience for fairgoers.

Meanwhile, baseball returned to the High Desert on Tuesday night as the High Desert Yardbirds played their home opener at Adelanto Stadium. The semi-pro team will play most home games at 7 p.m. and has a full lineup of games this month and throughout July as it plays a 64-game schedule.

Though the Yardbirds are an independent team and have no affiliation with any major-league ball club, you can bet the players will be eager to show they belong in professional baseball and will be trying to entice a big-league club to give them a shot.

Ticket prices are family friendly, too. Season tickets are just $200 and you can get 12 tickets and the use of a Skybox for $100. Individual tickets range from $6 to $7.50.

Next year we'll have more sports options, too, as the High Desert Fury men's and women's soccer team will begin play at Adelanto Stadium. The Fury expect to play an exhibition match or two in August or September, but their seasons will begin March.

Ticket prices haven't yet been announced, but team officials say soon you'll be able to deposit $20 toward a season ticket and have the opportunity to pick out your seat.

It's an exciting time for sports and entertainment lovers here in the High Desert and we expect there will be many more events coming our way at both the High Desert Event Center in Victorville and Adelanto Stadium in the near future.

The next time somebody tells you there's nothing to do in our region, remind them of the Fair, Yardbirds and Fury.
