Cigarette tax unfair

After reading the article "New Tax Packs A Punch" by Rene Ray De La Cruz on 4/1/2017, I'm not sure who to attack first. The author, who may have been submitting an April Fools joke, or the completely thoughtless and inconsiderate people who voted to pass that law. How do you expect the American people to get better off financially if you want to tax your neighbor like that? The only thing worse than not trusting politicians is not being able to trust your neighbor.

Now let's understand a few things. I wish smoking on no one. I hope people choose to avoid cigarettes. That being said, if people choose to smoke, I'm certainly not going to stand in the way of their liberty.

Just what would make someone want to burden other Americans with these unjust taxes? Just what kind of American believes this way? What gives you the right to impose this? You stole the liberty from my right. I smoke as a choice. I was and am fully aware of my choice and its consequences, and the economic value it could be if it weren't 75 percent tax.

Now here are some facts. I have receipts. My cost for Kool Milds, a premium brand, was $52.50 a carton of 10 packs, 20 cigarettes per pack, when I first started investigating this area for retirement in August of 2015. In January of 2016 it became $53.16, and by March 2016 it was $57.48. Total on vote day was $58.19. I buy at the cheapest place just like 75 percent of the people. I am quoting "out the door" prices for cartons. Today the price is $75.32. (I know not a full $20 more.)

I thought this article was just a feel good piece for your readers who approved this unjust tax. I believe truthful reporting on this tax would have brought the results much closer. The state’s website was a good source.

Now you face a gas tax. Amazing how the people are crying. I drive 80-100 miles a month so should I push for $2 a gallon.

The right's lies

Re: "How quickly the left forgets" .... Where did President Obama turn America into “Amerika”? Did he need Vladimir Putin’s help to get “elected”?

There’s a lot more evidence to support the Trump/Putin connections than there is to support any of the ludicrous and asinine lies repeated by the right, like Hillary Clinton transferred 20 percent of America’s uranium stock to the Russians, President Obama wiretapped Donald Trump and Susan Rice is lying about it or that the “liberal” media doesn’t allow opposing views. The people that believe this are the same ones that believe Hillary ran a child sex slave ring from a Washington, D.C. pizza parlor and Obama is the Antichrist.

It was the CIA that said the Benghazi attack was influenced by the now infamous anti-Muslim video, as were dozens of other attacks and protests at U.S. diplomatic facilities around the world on or around the same day, because that was what the evidence indicated. We still see “Hillary lied and four men died” bumper stickers on the cars of ignorant people, but over 4,000 Americans (and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis) died because George W. Bush lied, but these people don’t care about that, nor do they care that over 60 people died in attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities under George W. Bush.

In his short time as a president not elected by the people, Donald Trump and his minions have managed to humiliate our nation on an almost daily basis and demonstrate that his incredible arrogance, ignorance and pathological lying make him a danger to the entire world, and the world is starting to view us that way.

Doctors, lawyers and lawsuits

I am a little skeptical about the horrific-looking spectacle of doctor Dou being dragged down the aisle of a United Airlines airplane. Of course the airline's policies and the complete lack of common sense of the people enforcing them cannot be defended. And if United had just upped their offer of $800 to a higher figure, no doubt someone would have volunteered to give up a seat. I'm sure the management of United is now dumbfounded as to why that logical solution was not used.

However, evidently Dr. Dou talked on his phone with his attorney immediately after being selected to exit. Is there a possibility that an attorney might, just might, with the suddenly appearing chance of a client's multimillion dollar settlement (of which the attorney, of course, would reap a large portion) would then offer some friendly advice? Why else would a presumably rational doctor choose to let himself be dragged off like a bag of potatoes, supposedly suffering multiple injuries, down the aisle of the plane?

We all know, as the doctor no doubt did, that there are always people around with smart phones so the scene would be filmed with maximum drama, complete with the horrified cries of the other passengers, for all the world to see. It will be interesting to see if the amount of the doctor's settlement will be made public.

Program in jeopardy

The Barstow Senior Nutrition program would like to thank donors and recipients of our Home Delivered Meal program for your continued support. Your voluntary donations are critically important for the continuation of our Home Delivered Meal program in the High Desert communities of Apple Valley, Barstow, Hesperia, Victorville, Adelanto, Phelan, and Pinion Hills.

It saddens me to inform you that donations have fallen short this year, and as we are coming to the end of the fiscal year, we may not have the funding to provide home delivered meals in the month of June.

While our Home Delivered Meal program is partially funded, we rely on voluntary donations from our clients and others to make up the rest of the funding needed for this program. Your continuous voluntary donation of just $45 a month can make a huge difference in the solvency of the Home Delivered Meals program in the High Desert. All donations go back into the program to serve meals to homebound senior citizens.

Please make donation checks payable to: Barstow Senior Nutrition – MOW, and mail to Barstow Senior Nutrition, 555 Melissa Ave., Barstow, CA 92311.

We thank you for your continued support of our Home Delivered Meal program that brings vital nutritional support to hundreds of senior citizens in the High Desert communities.
