Town transparency lacking

Town accounting doesn't add up and there is no transparency. For years the General Fund lacks revenue to fund expenditures without transfers to balance the fund. Incumbents, during last election, said General Fund reserve was $4 million. Current 2016-2017 budget only reports the prior 2015-2016 year reserves at $4.4 million as of July 2015.

Now there is a electric provider program General Fund loan of $2.6 million and another $1 million to parks and rec so the current General Fund reserve is $400,000-800,000?

Pat Orr was correct in his column on 1/10/2017 regarding town's electric provider program, "...this costs the town almost nothing..." Right, it will cost the ratepayer/taxpayer.

Past General Fund loans, parks and rec $6.6 million and golf course at least $3.5 million.

Where will ongoing legal costs for Liberty Utilities eminent domain come from? Loan from road funds while roads crumble? Low/mod housing, $16 million spent and no projects built. Ever increasing CALPERS unfunded pension liability.

Council gave Town Manager inter-fund loan authority not to exceed $10 million per fund, and not to exceed $60 million in all funds total, and suggests they can bond up to $200 million to acquire water company. How much debt when the Town decides to build their own energy generation facilities (did anyone read the town documents)?

Ongoing litigation due to Town's lack of legal compliance. Closed sessions that routinely have no reportable action.

Will the public be surprised when it is too late and their debt is far over their you know what? Where have we seen these issues before, cities of Beaumont, Bell, San Bernardino, Stockton?

Unhappy day

Where was President Obama ungodly, weak or un-American? Where was this blatant race-baiting and riding roughshod over the Constitution that conservatives continue to blather on about? What one-world-order was he promoting?

It was the Republican right that refused to work with Obama and took every opportunity to lie to Americans about him and play on their ignorance and bigotry. How many out there still wrongly believe he is a Muslim? It is also the Republicans who repeatedly defied the Constitution, like refusing to even allow a hearing for President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee.

And how can right-wingers accuse Obama of being supported by “elites” when they put the biggest elitist of them all in the White House and he is staffing his cabinet with even more unqualified elitists?

Trump is not the winning team, Hillary Clinton got nearly three million more votes than he did. He can’t even accept that more people watched Obama’s inauguration than his or that millions of illegal voters didn’t cost him the popular vote because they didn’t exist. Trump has given us a “doing-team” that will do nothing for the average American but plenty for the already rich and powerful. He did, however, manage to unite the world in protest against him as millions of people around the globe took to the streets to protest the great threat this ignorant, obnoxious charlatan poses to the world. The day Donald Trump became president is the unhappiest day in the history of our great nation.

Refugee ban not new

Today (1/31/17) I received an email from the people of Mozilla Firefox, a web browser, complaining that President Trump's temporary refugee ban was setting a precedent and keeping talented people from entering the country. Below is my reply:

Mr. Beard,

I have read your statement concerning President Trump's temporary ban on refugees from some Mideast countries. This ban does not set a new precedent. If you check history, immigration bans have been implemented by several presidents. President Obama banned refugees from Iraq. Also I would be greatly surprised if you had recently hired any technical talent from any of these banned countries.

You ignore the fact that these countries present a higher rate of danger to this country. Have you not paid attention to what has been happening in Europe? These refugees do not want to assimilate. They form their own enclaves and perpetuate the 12th century culture that allows violence against women and LGBT.

Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and a number of other Muslim countries are not banned from travel here.

The safety of this country and its citizens is paramount. Why is it so important to bring these people here? Their safety and ours are best preserved by establishing safe zones in their countries. The number of people that could be accommodate in these safe zones is far greater than could be accommodated here and is more cost effective.

Liberals have this unreasoning need to cast this country as something evil and empirical. All the good we have done is cast aside and only that which supports their narrative is brought forth. We do more good in one day than many of the socialist countries they hold up as good can do in a year.

The safety of this country and its citizens is not deplorable!

Let the left take them

Re: "Activists to Cook: Reverse support on Trump's executive order," Daily Press, 01/31/17 ... Yes, reverse your support and place the refugees (and some terrorists) in the houses right next door to these activists. They fight so hard placing them in my neighborhood. How about we place them in theirs?

I find it somewhat hypocritical that these same people were silent when President Obama froze all immigration from Iraq for sixmonths back in 2011...and from Cuba when he left office.

But then again Obama isn't a Republican.

Where's the outrage?

My thoughts on the abortion issue and taking the life of the unborn (God’s creation). My question: There are many pastors in the High Desert. Almost never, do I see any of them express outrage over the taking of the human life of the unborn on demand abortion.

Where are you pastors? Oh yes, I get it, you may preach to the choir in a safe environment or could it be you just do not want to ruffle the feathers of others? Are you fearful of push back from those engaged in this barbaric procedure?

One needs not abort a child when it could be put up for adoption and or use birth control. I need not remind you pastors one day you will answer for you silence. I have been turned off in last few years from so-called pastors that are comfortable in your positions, often a very good income while many play a lot of golf and hire others to do what you should do as a pastor while parishioners pay the tab.

Sad you are.
