Man convicted for beating of 2-year-old
BARSTOW • A Barstow man will be sentenced next month after he pleaded no contest to charges for severely beating his 2-year-old son, leaving the child with broken bones and deep bruising.
Anthony Carmona, 41, will face eight years in state prison for willful cruelty to a child after he changed his plea during his preliminary hearing Thursday at Barstow Superior Court.
Carmona was arrested June 29 after police investigated severe injuries of a 2-year-old boy brought to Barstow Community Hospital. The child was treated for a broken leg, several contusions and bruising to his head, back and legs — injuries so extensive he had to be transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center for additional treatment.
The victim’s mother called the police from the emergency room, where she told officers she was at work when the injuries took place at her and Carmona’s home on the 700 block of Dolph Court.
Court records show Carmona had previous convictions for child abuse and battery in Barstow and assault with a deadly weapon in Victorville.
Carmona’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 10 at Barstow Superior Court.
