Man takes book tour on the road
YERMO • Barstow residents may see a piece of history slowly rolling by this week as a Nevada man travels across California in his covered wagon.
Howard West, a Death Valley tour guide and travel writer, made his way through Yermo on his book tour with his covered wagon and two animals Saturday afternoon.
The wagon is supposed to make its way through Barstow as early as Tuesday, according to West’s Twitter posts.
By Saturday, West had traveled about 340 miles from Pilgrim Ranch — which is about 50 miles outside of Tonopah, Nev. He made it to Yermo that afternoon and was headed to a campground to rest and check his Twitter.
West is selling two of his books, “The Last Grand Adventure” and “Locked Gates” — which chronicle his travels. West’s efforts are to help him raise money to keep his ranch afloat. He currently owes about $4,000 on his property, and his books are his main source of income.
West is making his way out to Salton Sea, near San Diego, where he says that its residents are not “in the box” thinkers like himself.
“If I get enough people to support me, I can be done in a month,” West said. “If not, I may be doing this forever.”
