Grand jury eyes Newberry Springs CSD
Citizen group to be present at upcoming meeting
BARSTOW • The San Bernardino County grand jury will be conducting an investigation of the Newberry Springs Community Services District starting Tuesday, preceding the district’s regularly scheduled meeting.
In response to a subpoena of financial documents the CSD received in August, the grand jury recently requested further documentation.
Paulette Marshall, general manager of the CSD, confirmed that they had complied with the subpoena and were working toward gathering more documents to appease the full request.
The Newberry Springs CSD is comprised of a president, vice president and three directors who manage the volunteer Fire Department, Parks and Recreation and street lighting, according to its website.
When contacted Friday, the San Bernardino County grand jury said they could not confirm or deny the investigation in Newberry Springs.
Per California grand jury procedure, the investigation will be confidential until a public report is released the following year, sometime in June or July.
According to the agency’s website, the civil or “watchdog” responsibilities of the grand jury cover the examination of all aspects of county government, including special districts, to ensure the county is being governed honestly and efficiently and that county monies are being handled appropriately.
The next Newberry Springs CSD meeting will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m.
