Officers search for missing Newberry Springs woman

NEWBERRY SPRINGS • Deputies and family members are searching for a missing Newberry Springs woman who disappeared after going on a walk near her home in the rural desert area.

Lydia Garcia, 62, was last seen by a neighbor at her residence on the 48400 block of Silver Valley Road at around 8:30 a.m. Aug. 10, according to a report by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Garcia reportedly walked away from the location and never returned.

According to family members, she left her purse and cellphone at her trailer. Her boyfriend, Don Riley, waited 24 hours before filing a missing persons report.

Sheriff’s deputies have already conducted ground searches for Garcia, said Sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Bachman, though the efforts have proved fruitless thus far.

“It’s very scary,” said her sister, Michelle Jansen. “It’s like she just dropped off the face of the earth.”

So far, deputies have no other information about where she may be, Jansen said. She and other family members plan to post fliers around Barstow and Newberry Springs to hopefully get information that could aid in her rescue.

Garcia has shoulder-length silver hair, weighs 200 pounds and is 5 feet, 3 inches tall.
Anyone with information about Garcia’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Barstow Sheriff’s Department at (760) 256-4838 or 911 if necessary.
