Three arrested in armed robbery, high speed chase
Police search for two more
BARSTOW • Five suspects in an armed robbery of a Barstow gas station led police on a high speed pursuit to Apple Valley and a foot pursuit before three were arrested, police said.
Police received a call at 1:26 a.m. Wednesday reporting the Lenwood Shell at 2870 Lenwood Road had been robbed, according to a report by the Barstow Police Department. The clerk said the subjects came into the station wearing hooded jackets with shirts covering their faces and one holding a handgun. The subjects demanded cash and made off with the undisclosed amount of cash as well as hot Cheetos, cigarettes and lotto tickets, according to Police Det. Keith Libby.
Barstow Police Sgt. Chris Kirby located the suspect’s vehicle, a white Toyota Tacoma, heading southbound on Interstate 15 near Hodge Road, the report said. Kirby called for backup from the California Highway Patrol before attempting to stop the vehicle.
The suspects fled, going faster than 90 mph, the report said. They exited the interstate on Dale Evans Road and continued to a rural area of Apple Valley. There, the suspects fled on foot, though two were immediately apprehended.
Police contacted the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department for assistance in setting up a perimeter to search for the remaining three, the report said. A Barstow Police K-9 unit was also called on-scene to search. One suspect was found hiding in a desert area. The canine apprehended the suspect after he refused to comply with officers. While the canine apprehended the suspect, the dog ripped the shirt of a Sheriff’s deputy who accidentally got in his way, Libby said.
Officers were told one of the suspects may not have entered the getaway vehicle in Barstow, but instead may have fled on foot in the Lenwood area near I-15. Officers searched the area, though did not find him. Police believe the suspect may have been picked up by an uninvolved party after the incident.
Several items taken from the robbery were recovered from the apprehended suspects, though the handgun was not found, Libby said.
Police arrested Joshua Atlas, 19, Garrett Jensen, 22, and a 17-year-old male, the report said. All were booked for armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, firearm. They may also be charged with making criminal threats and evading a peace officer when the case is submitted to the District Attorney’s office.
Police are still searching for two unidentified male suspects. Those with information concerning this case are urged to contact the Barstow Police Department at (760) 255-2211. Those wishing to report anonymously can contact the WeTip hotline at (800) 78-CRIME or visit www.WeTip.com.
