Motel sign removed

A contractor removes the iconic Brant’s Motel Sign on Main Street Thursday morning. The 1950s-era sign was declared a public nuisance in March by the Barstow City Council, and was ordered to be removed. The motel itself was heavily damaged in a 2006 fire and has remained closed ever since.

Contractors at the scene said that they did not know what was going to happen to the sign.

Boneheaded city hall. There must be 20 or more eye-sores on Main St. If this sign is so important, what of the other properties? Will they move to cause the owners to develop or improve those at the expense of the taxpayer, lien them and wait for 50 years to recoup the cost? When was the last time a new building was built downtown? 20 years ago? If they cared about progress why not encourage developers to tear down and rebuild downtown? The city was obviously designed by a lazy eyed engineer who couldn't draw a straight line. Streets abutt each other like doglegs, no sense or reason to the layout. It could have been Silver Valley that was developed had it not been for greedy land owners. The point being, being stuck with bad decisions in the past doesn't mean we have to continue down that road in the future.

Well I guess if you cant book on price line we don’t want you in town that’s why we built all the NEW MOTELS with brand names.

Silver Valley is a school district, not a town. If you want to know real greed find out the history of Daggett. The town fathers jacked up land prices so high the railroad chose the area known as Barstow even with all the hills that had to be built around. If you want to see dumb planning come to Texas.

the didn't demand the sign come down because it was an eyesore. they wanted it removed because it hung over the sidewalk.

The sign came down because City Council put a lien on the owner of that motel and the owner kept coming up with excuses that other potential buyers were going to acquire the establishment. City Council flexed its muscle and down came the sign.

Well it looks like the city clan members are really bored. Way to go Gomez, Keep up the good work. ;o) It would be great to have city council members and a Mayor that knew how to do there J O B!
