11-year-old Downey girl killed in rollover crash

NEWBERRY SPRINGS • An 11-year-old girl was killed in an alcohol-related rollover crash on Interstate Highway 40 Friday evening.

According to California Highway Patrol reports, Lori Montaro of Downey was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Utility on westbound I-40 near Newberry Springs at 7:29 p.m. when she allowed her vehicle to drift left into the median and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to overturn several times.

Lori's daughter Caitlyn Montaro, 11, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered head injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel. Lori sustained major head injuries and was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.

Lori’s ten-year-old son and a 43-year-old man in the vehicle were transported to Barstow Community Hospital with minor injuries.

Investigation revealed that Lori was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
