Newport woman dies in semi truck collision

NORTH OF BARSTOW • A Newport Coast woman was killed and a man suffered major injuries Friday afternoon when their SUV collided with a semi truck about 50 miles north of Barstow.

According to a California Highway Patrol report, a 2011 Chevrolet SUV driven by a 39-year-old Newport Coast man collided with a semi truck on northbound Interstate 15 just north of Zzyzx Road around 5:05 p.m.

The driver and passenger — Keona Lau, 41 — were both airlifted by Mercy Air to University Medical Center in Las Vegas with major injuries, according to the report. Lau later died as a result of her injuries.

The driver of the semi truck did not suffer injuries in the crash, according to the report. All three people involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts.
The collision is under investigation by the CHP.
