“Peace March” to honor Martin Luther King Jr.

STAFF WRITER

BARSTOW • In celebration and honor of the civil rights activist, a local club will walk through the streets of Barstow in the annual Peace March Saturday.

“Let’s walk together in peace, love and harmony so out of our community will come love, hope and unity,” a flyer advertising the walk read.

Children from Tot Time preschool have joined in the event since 2006, carrying “Happy Birthday” signs and other arts and crafts in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.

“We march because Dr. King was color blind; his eyes did not see color,” Loretta Carruthers of Tot Time told the Desert Dispatch in 2012.

The march will begin at 8 a.m. at Williams Street and Barstow Road and end at the Cora Harper Fitness Center.

Dr. Shirley Lester will be the keynote speaker with the theme “Progressing by honoring the past, facing today with courage and planning for the future.”

The Art and Industrial Women’s and Men’s Club organizes the walk each year.
