BHS awards over 500 honor students

STAFF WRITER

BARSTOW• More than 500 Barstow High School students were recognized for making the honor roll during the fall semester last year.

And to showcase their academic achievements, each were provided with swag to adorn to their letterman jacket.

The students were given letters, pins and certificates during a ceremony in the high school’s new gym Thursday evening — the third ceremony of its kind since Derrick Delton took the helm as principal at the beginning of the 2011 school year.

“We realized we wanted to go to a more academic culture,” Delton said of his and his staff’s vision.

The letters are similar to what athletes at the school would receive, he said.

Each student’s certificate indicated which honor roll recognition they earned, split into three sub-categories between 3.0 to 4.0 GPAs.

Honor students in last fall’s semester represented roughly 37 percent of the school’s approximate 1,350 student population.
