Employers look to hire at upcoming fort job fair

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

FORT IRWIN • A variety of companies ranging from large defense contractors like Lockheed Martin Corporation to beauty product carriers like Mary Kay Cosmetics will be looking for prospective employees on Wednesday.

Employers will be gathering at Fort Irwin to hold a job fair advertising both permanent and temporary positions, according to Silvia Moreno, Fort Irwin employment readiness program coordinator.

Thirty businesses, government agencies and education organizations will be represented at the job fair. Ten of them will be schools, ranging from WyoTech to Silver Valley Unified School District. Major fort employers like IAP World Services and the Fort Irwin Commissary will also have representatives, said Moreno. She noted that job-seekers will also be able to talk to representatives about off-post jobs like with the United States Census Bureau and Social Security Administration.

Moreno said she did not know the specific pay range of the available positions.

“The entry level would obviously start low and the more technical government jobs would pay more,” she said.

According to Jamel Edmund, spokesman for the Fort Irwin Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation department, the job fair can serve as an opportunity for employers to conduct initial screenings.

Moreno noted that despite the recession, employers at Fort Irwin are still looking to hire because employees are always coming and going on post. “The turnover rate is extreme,” she said.

As far as tips for job-seekers, Moreno advised candidates to bring extra copies of resumes and to wear professional attire. “Dress nicely, dress to impress,” she said. For more information, call Fort Irwin at (760) 380-3358.
