Firefighters get hazardous materials training

Loren Nichols, 15, a member of the Explorers program with the Barstow Fire Protection District, gets hosed off during a hazardous materials drill for the paid call firefighters Wednesday evening. The drill required firefighters to respond to a scenario in which eight victims (played by the Explorers) were exposed to chemicals during an on-the-job accident at a swimming pool cleaning company. The firefighters used specialized computer equipment to identify the chemicals and then evacuated the victims, some of them on stretchers, and hosed them off at decontamination stations.
