Scam targets elderly veterans with fees for financial help
BARSTOW • Scammers are targeting elderly veterans by charging them fees for financial services, the County Department of Aging and Adult Services says.
The agency says that unauthorized individuals or organizations sometimes attempt to contact veterans to offer help assisting with their Veterans Administration benefits and confidential financial information.
Sometimes scammers have representatives that visit senior centers, assisted living facilities, nursing homes or community centers, the agency said in a news release.
The agency says seniors who are veterans should be vigilant and that only attorneys, agents and representatives of service organizations that are recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs are authorized to help veterans with their financial information.
These reputable organizations will not demand fees for their services, the department says.
If you feel you’ve been the victim of a scam, contact your local police or sheriff’s station.
