Police called for suspicious package at county building
Turned out to be false alarm
BARSTOW • Police responded to the county building after an employee reported a suspicious package in what turned out to be a false alarm Tuesday morning.
At approximately 9:14 a.m., officers from the Barstow Police Department were called to investigate a black suitcase left near a water cooler in the building’s main entrance, police officials said.
County employees evacuated the building, located adjacent to the courthouse on the 300 block of E. Mountain View Street, prior to police arriving.
A county employee told officers that a man had entered their office and asked if he could leave his suitcase with them. The employee said he had advised the man that he could not and went about his business. Shortly afterward, the employee turned around and noticed the unattended suitcase near the water cooler.
Arriving officers were able to locate and detain the man and question him about the contents of the suitcase and his reason for leaving it behind.
The man stated he needed to take care of some business in court, but wasn’t allowed to bring his suitcase inside. He also explained his suitcase contained clothing and hygiene products, police said.
After officers checked the suitcase, they were able to confirm that the contents corroborated the man’s story and he was released without incident.
