Convicted child sex offender dies morning of sentencing
Cause and matter of death to be determined
VICTORVILLE • A Phelan man died the same morning he was scheduled to be sentenced in Barstow for the sexual assault of a boy as young as 13 years old — with one incident occurring at a Barstow truck stop, Sandy Fatland, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner’s Department, confirmed Friday.
Aaron Antill, 38, pleaded no contest to lewd and lascivious acts with a child and to two counts of sex acts on a victim 14 or 15 years of age in October.
On Monday morning, Antill was scheduled to be sentenced for the crimes at Barstow Superior Court, facing four years and four months in prison.
That same morning, the San Bernardino County Fire Department was dispatched to Antill’s residence at the 3900 block of Amador Road in Phelan for a medical aid call made by his wife, Fatland said.
Antill was taken to Desert Valley Hospital in Victorville where he was pronounced dead. Officials at the hospital called the coroner’s office at 10 a.m. Monday morning with confirmation, according to Fatland.
The coroner’s office has completed their examination, but the cause and matter of death is still pending, Fatland said.
San Bernardino County Fire could not provide further details as of Friday.
A woman who commented Monday night on the Desert Dispatch’s article of Antill’s conviction, stated Antill took his own life, though officials have not confirmed this.
Officials with knowledge of the situation could not be reached until Friday to provide general details.
Antill, a truck driver, was arrested by Barstow police in August 2010 after a 15-year-old San Bernardino boy reported to San Bernardino police Antill had sex with him on several occasions, including in June 2010 at a Barstow truck stop during a cross-country trip.
Authorities later found the assaults began as early as 2007.
