Local Jackie Conaway runs for Congress
HINKLEY • Hinkley resident and former Democratic Congressional candidate Jackie Conaway announced her run for the newly drawn 8th Congressional District on Tuesday.
The new 8th District — which lacks a current representative — covers the entire Barstow area and most of the High Desert in San Bernardino County, stretching north to Mammoth Lakes and Bridgeport.
Conaway and Republican Gregg Immus, former chief of staff to Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, are the two candidates that officially announced their run since California finalized the new districts in August.
41st District Congressman Jerry Lewis may move from his new 31st District to run in the 8th, and San Bernardino County 1st District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt said he is interested if Lewis doesn’t run. Victorville Councilwoman Angela Valles has shown interest in the new district as well.
Conaway ran against 25th District Representative Buck McKeon in 2008 and 2010. In the 2010 election she took in 38.1 percent of the vote and 43.7 percent of the vote in the San Bernardino County portion of the district.
“I haven’t changed,” Conaway said, adding she is still in support of scaling back the military presence overseas, supporting veterans, and protecting programs like Medicare.
According to a prepared statement from Conaway, she will focus on four aspects of jobs — job protection, job growth, providing a safety net while people look for jobs, and education and placement assistance for getting jobs.
“American jobs and employment taken care of, will take care of everything else,” she said.
