Car accident near Newberry Springs claims 9-year-old boy
Driver lost control, vehicle overturned
AFTON • A 9-year-old boy was killed in a car accident Sunday afternoon on northbound Interstate 15, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.
At approximately 12:55 p.m., the driver of a white 1997 Ford Explorer carrying five passengers made an abrupt turn to the left, for reasons still unknown, and lost control of the vehicle south of Afton Road. The vehicle slid a short distance, then overturned several times, CHP said.
A 9-year-old boy, a resident of Turlock, was seated in the left rear and partially ejected as a result, sustaining fatal, major head trauma, according to the press release. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The four other passengers sustained moderate injuries and were transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton for treatment.
The CHP’s Barstow station is investigating the incident.
