CHP: Scammers use officer’s death for fake fundraiser
After the death of a California Highway Patrol Officer near Placerville late last month, scammers have already sprouted, claiming to raise money for the officers family.
On Aug. 3, the CHP received a report that a someone had placed phone calls attempting to raise money for the family of Douglas Scott Russell, who was struck by a vehicle while deploying a spike strip on Highway 50 to assist with a high-speed chase.
Independent organizations such as the 1199 Foundation raise money for the CHP but do not solicit by phone, mail, the Internet or in person, according to CHP Commissioner Mike Brown.
“If anyone contacts you claiming they represent CHP officers or their families and seek contributions, tell them no,” he stated in a release.
Residents in northern and central California have also reported calls of people asking for money to support CHP anti-drunk driving programs. All money for driving under the influence and public-safety programs come from the CHP’s budget or federal grants.
The CHP advises anyone contacted to notify local authorities.
