BARSTOW — A preliminary coroner’s report confirms that Kelly Caldwell died of the injuries she suffered during the Christmas evening pit bull attack in Yermo.

Caldwell, 45, died at Barstow Community Hospital after paramedics transported her from the scene at the intersection of Second Street and Yermo Road. A recent autopsy found that Caldwell died of multiple perforating injuries, bites, due to a dog attack, said Sandy Fatland, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Fatland indicated that a complete autopsy had not yet been completed and that medical examiners are waiting for lab results to finalize the cause of death.

No charges have been filed in Caldwell’s death as detectives at the Barstow sheriff’s station continue to investigate. Det. Gary Hart said the preliminary autopsy report is consistent with the reports of a dog mauling, but the investigation continues.

“We’re still investigating other avenues,” he said.

Hart is waiting for autopsy reports and DNA results from the two dogs shot by deputies at the scene. One dog was shot when it threatened a paramedic working on Caldwell at the scene. Another one was shot the following day when it became aggressive toward an animal control worker. Two other dogs have been taken as evidence in the case. Once the investigation is completed, Hart said a report will be sent to the District Attorney’s office where a decision whether to press charges will be made.
