Mini van rolls into high school

This is an update of a story originally posted earlier Wednesday afternoon.

BARSTOW — A mini van traveling north of Mount Vernon Avenue near the Barstow High School lost control and crashed into a fence lining the back of the school. There were no injuries.

Don Diel, a teacher at BHS, arrived on scene on the scene just after the van rolled into the fence, flattening a large section of it, around 11 a.m. According to Diel, witnesses said the van apparently came down the hill on Mount Vernon and started rolling before it hit the fence.

According to a Barstow Police report, the van’s driver, Selwyn Yom, 19, was driving too fast on Mount Vernon Avenue and failed to stop at a stop sign. Yom struck a curb while attempting to turn right and crashed through a fence at the school. The van rolled and came to rest on its side.

No children were in the area at the time of the crash, Diel said. However, the blacktop area would fill with students in a hour or so for lunch, he said.

Barstow police officers and district maintenance workers responded to the collision. Yom was cited for the crash.

Anyone with further information about the crash may contact Officer Jose Barrientos of the Barstow Police Department at 256-2211.
