23-year-old Barstow man still missing
Police follow leads into Ebinger's disappearance
BARSTOW • Police investigation continues into the disappearance of a 23-year-old Barstow man, who was reported missing by his mother more than a month ago.
S. John Ebinger — also known as “S.J.” — was last seen on the evening of Dec. 18 , driving his pickup truck on Highland Avenue in Barstow.
Since then, Barstow police have followed up on the few leads they’ve received — including one Tuesday morning at a house where it was believed additional clues could be located, Barstow Police Lieutenant Mike Hunter said.
The house inspection did not turn up any evidence, though, Hunter confirmed.
A few weeks ago, police received one call that Ebinger’s truck — a 2006 blue Ford Ranger with license plate number 8G24181 — was possibly spotted on Interstate 15 near Dale Evans Parkway. Police enlisted the aid of the California Highway Patrol Aviation Division, but they were unable to locate the vehicle by helicopter.
After police obtained information that Ebinger would sometimes go alone into the desert to collect his thoughts, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Aviation Division scoured the local-area desert to no avail.
Currently, police are investigating an anonymous tip received Friday that Ebinger’s truck was spotted in Modesto.
“We’re still asking for the public’s assistance,” Hunter said. “The case will remain open until he is located.”
Police are treating Ebinger’s disappearance as a missing person’s case with suspicious circumstances. Ebinger and his truck have been entered into the National Crime Information Center database.
Anyone with any information as to the whereabouts of S. John Ebinger or his pickup truck is urged to contact the Barstow Police Department at (760)256-2211 or Detective Angel Nevarez at (760)255-5167. Callers wishing to remain anonymous may also call the WE-TIP hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME.
