BARSTOW• The Barstow Community Coalition will sponsor a community forum about the dangers of synthetic drugs Tuesday.
Jim Mayer, the coalition’s event committee chairperson, will host and Sarah Boyer, from the Institute for Public Strategies, will provide a key note presentation. The forum will consist of representatives from San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Barstow Police Department and San Bernardino County Drug Courts.
The forum will address several topics about synthetic drugs, known popularly as “Spice/K2” and “bath salts,” including: Marketing, adverse health effects, price, availability, challenges to law enforcement, loopholes in state and national synthetic drug laws and examples of municipal policies.
Synthetic drugs can cause side effects in users such as extreme paranoia, hallucinations, seizures and suicidal and homicidal thoughts and actions. Many of the products continue to be sold under false pretenses over-the-counter at retail establishments throughout the High Desert, according to the coalition.
The forum will begin at 5 p.m. at Crossroads Assembly Church on 501 Avenue A in Barstow. All interested members of the community are invited to attend.
The Barstow Fire Protection District, as well as other public safety and educational stakeholders, have also been invited to participate.
