BARSTOW • Two Barstow Community Hospital staff members welcomed their first child who was also the first baby born in the new year in Barstow.

Kayla and Matt Washington welcomed their newborn girl, Raylee Washington, a day after the holiday on Wednesday. Although, Washington’s due date was Monday, she said she was not expecting a “New Year’s baby.”

“Since we told the Obstetrics Department our due date it seemed like they somehow made it happen,” Kayla Washington said.

Both parents have worked in the new hospital since it’s opening in October and at the former Barstow Community Hospital. Kayla Washington is a supply coordinator in the purchasing department and her husband Matt Washington is a radiology aide. The two met while in school for respiratory therapy.

“It was interesting to see all of the hospital employees help in the delivery,” Matt Washington said. “My coworker Tim’s mom was the lead nurse.”

Washington was in labor for more than 12 hours and delivered around 7 p.m. The two joked that they wished the new baby had come before the new year so they could have used the tax deduction.

“We were surprised to be the first ones in the new year. We were hoping before so we could use the tax write-off,” Matt Washington said. “It was unexpected, kind of different to have it be a new year and a new hospital.”

Raylee weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces and was 20 inches long at birth and her name was chosen after Kayla Washington’s aunt Marilyn Ray.
