Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce considers 'smart app'
BARSTOW • Apple recently unveiled its newest iPhone 5 nationwide. In the near future, Barstow businesses could advertise to visitors through a smartphone application.
The Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce is considering introducing a pilot smartphone application to promote local businesses and connect with younger crowds.
“It is to gain awareness to travelers who are in a hurry or are not aware of everything Barstow has to offer,” said Joseph Hisquierdo, the chamber’s director of public relations. “It also helps the businesses gain exposure beyond the city limits.”
The application would incorporate images of Barstow, including the historic Harvey House and Route 66. It would include a mobile directory of chamber members, coupons, contact information, hours of operation and video advertisements. Under the pilot program, businesses would pay $10 per month to advertise. Chamber members will consider the program at its next meeting in October.
Chamber vice president DeeDe Crigler said the smartphone application would allow hotels to advertise their rates and restaurants to post their menus.
“If we can get enough businesses to get involved with the app, it would be great,” Crigler said.
