Barstow man killed in hit and run
BARSTOW • A Barstow man died Monday from injuries sustained in a weekend head-on hit and run where the other driver fled from the scene on foot.
Officers are searching for the driver of the silver 2000 Chevy Malibu who for unknown reasons drove head on into the white 1999 Honda Civic on Saturday, killing its driver, a 25-year-old Barstow resident, said Captain Merritt Mielke with the California Highway Patrol.
Family members say Brett Fortenberry was driving home traveling westbound on Old Highway 58 near Ramirez Road when the suspect drove into his lane.
Fortenberry was transported to the Barstow Community Hospital and later airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center. He died Monday morning.
CHP officers have been working with Barstow Police Department and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department to track down the registered owner of the Malibu and ultimately the driver who fled on foot. Officials suspect alcohol is involved with the driver of the Malibu.
The registered owner is from Barstow, though officials would not release more information.
